Drip.
Drop.
Drip.
Drop.
Dawnstar woke to the tell-tale sound of rain pattering against the Highledge. Her tired eyes opened to find that, outside, the sky was gray with rainclouds and that raindrops had turned the stony ledge dark and wet. The smell of rain freshened all the scents in the camp, making them sharp and crisp. Her Clanmates were moving about outside, despite the rain.
She sighed, and supposed she might as well get up too. But she wasn't going to get her pelt wet just yet - after a stretch and a quick licking of her chest, she padded out to the very entrance of her den to observe the Clan in motion.

The sun would have risen not too long ago if the sky hadn't been so caked with thin grey rainclouds, but now it was only a lighter round blur behind the layer of cloud. The cold sprinkle of rain wasn't enough to get through Lioncloud's thick pelt, but it surely promised damp fur for some, and crabby elders. The large tom let out an exhausted sigh, he had just returned from an early dawn patrol by himself, and he hadn't been able to sleep last night; it would probably be wise to avoid him, for his kind personality can turn right around when he's tired and grumpy. The tom was crouching beside the soggy fresh-kill pile, nearly dozing off while waiting for some more cats to get out of their dens to go on another patrol with him, or tell him to go get some rest, either one worked for him. He shifted his paws that he was nearly losing circulation to as he turned his head to let his hazel eyes scan the camp in hope of a face or two peeking out of their lair's entrance. His eyes caught sight of Pearnose's pale blue eyes peering out from the safety of one of of the warriors' dens, though he knew not to waste his breath trying to convince her to go out on a patrol in this weather, and so early in the morning. Lioncloud turned his head far to the right, to the leader's den, where his mate, Dawnstar was sitting in the entrance of her rocky den, he huffed a little purr, and rose to his feet to go and greet her.

Pearnose crouched in the warriors den, peering out at the cats in the camp. Crazy... she thought as she looked at them. No cat in their right mind should want to be out in the rain right now, especially since it was still fairly cold. But she spotted Dawnstar leaving her den and there were several others milling about as well. Her eyes flashed as she found the cat she was looking for. When she had woken up, she'd found Birchflank's nest not just empty, but cold as well. Despite her reservations about getting wet, she stomped out of the warriors den and over to her mate. "Where have you been?" she demanded. "You must have been up for ages..." her voice softened a little, showing that she had actually been worried to wake and find him gone. She nudged his shoulder softly and offered him a small smile. "Come now, aren't you even a little tired? I can tell you've been in the rain for a while." The ginger she-cat bent her head to give Birchflank's soggy shoulder a few licks.

Dawnstar purred at the sight of Lioncloud approaching. This rainy chill would easily be taken away by the warmth of her mate. Though a little worry stirred in her - by the way he was lumbering, it looked as if he had done something extraneous this morning. The worry was replaced by irritation as Lioncloud's scent smelled of the forest and his fur was damper than the rest of the cats down below.
"Were you outside?" Dawnstar asked, eyes wide. "In this weather?"

Birchflank felt a small tickle of fear as he saw his beloved mate storming in his direction, but he knew better than that, she was just worried. The orange and white tom quietly purred, trying to reassure her, and licked her pale forehead. "Good morning Pearnose, please don't worry about me, I was just guarding the camp, thought it would be nice for the cat who was guarding. No need to worry." His voice was filled with love for her. He flicked his short white whiskers, sending a few silver droplets of rainwater flying in all directions as he continued. "But, if you really want, I can go back to sleep. Though my nest is probably just as wet as the rest of the camp, considering I woke up just a few hours before sunrise, because there was a leak." He gave one of his white forepaws a lick and grinned at the pale she-cat.

Lionstar chuckled at the clan leader's stern tone, it appeared he was in the same situation as Birchflank. "I couldn't go back to sleep after I'd woken up, so I went on an early dawn patrol. Dawnstar, trust me, the water hasn't soaked through my fur, and I am as fit as can be!" This wasn't exactly true, he was still somewhat weak, and the skin on his back felt slightly damp beneath his golden-brown fur. He gently butted his worried mate in the shoulder and silkily purred. "Would you like to go on a little hunting patrol with me, after the other patrols have been organized of course." Lioncloud stifled a yawn by raising a muddy paw to his mouth and swiping it over his ear, only causing him to have a dark and grimy streak on the top of his head.

Dawnstar sighed. She pressed her nose into his thick, lush neck fur - damp from the rain, but the smell of her mate was still there.
"Oh, all right," she mewed back. As much as she wanted Lioncloud to rest, she knew it was hard to spend time alone with him thanks to her duties. "We can go."
She reached up with her paw and smudged the streak on his forehead. "Just don't go playing in any wet, cold mud," she insisted.

A rumbling purr emanated from Lioncloud's broad chest as the buff cat agreed with him. His loving hazel eyes calmly blinked as he replied. "Thank you, Dawnstar. Oh! Don't worry about that! I'm not a kit anymore!" He tried to think of where they could go, and the first thought that came to mind was the Sky Oak. "Is the Sky Oak a good place for a walk? It's near the lake to maybe we could sit around the lake for a little while?" He mewed.

"If the lake isn't too swollen from the snowmelt and this rain, then that would be fine," Dawnstar replied. She recalled that the last time she left camp was when she had lost her second life - the fox's bite marks still stung on the back of her neck. It would be good to be outside without having to worry about the fox. We could check if it came back...
She went against the idea inwardly. Lioncloud had been holed up in camp for the most part since the greencough outbreak - the most time Dawnstar spent with him had been in the medicine cat's den. She wanted some time alone with her mate, outside of camp.
"Make sure all the patrols are set up," Dawnstar told him. "And come get me when you're done - I don't want to get any wetter than I have to!"

"You're going to catch a chill!" Pearnose insisted before sitting down with a sigh. If there was a leak above his nest, there was no sense in sending him back for rest. He would just get wetter. And if she offered him her nest, which was dry, he would get it all wet and then it wouldn't dry by the time she went to bed again. All in all, it wouldn't be so bad, but the she-cat had decided that she wanted to spend some time with her mate as long as they were both awake. She eyed him for a moment, feeling somewhat like a fretting queen with all her fussing over the younger warrior. "But, you don't have to go back to sleep if you don't want to. I mean... you're already awake. And now I'm out here in the rain too." She cast her blue gaze towards the sky for emphasis, blinking against the rain before looking back to her mate. "We can do something productive. Or we could try and find a dry spot to take shelter." She knew what she wanted to do. It seemed the sensible thing, but there was Birchflank, trying to look out for the good of the Clan, no matter the weather. Part of her hoped he would agree to finding a dry spot to settle in, but somehow she just didn't think it was likely.
