Ashcloud wasn't far from the WindClan camp, but she was far away enough that she wouldn't be disturbed, she hoped. She knew what would happen if someone saw her practicing her hunting crouches, and it made her pelt feel hot with embarrassment.
"How'd you even pass your assessment!" they'd laugh. "Maybe you should be called Ashpaw again!"
The usually calm she-cat winced, and decided to look around to double check that she wouldn't be found. She opened her mouth to taste the air, but couldn't smell any other cats nearby, and any cat scents in the area had gone stale.
"I should be fine, then," she mewed quietly, dropping to her haunches to practice her hunter's crouch again. With her tail straight out like a stick and her ears pinned back against her head, she padded forwards, and then pounced! A leaf crunched beneath her feet, and she purred with amusement.
Suddenly, she heard a scuffling noise and her ears pricked up. She looked around and tasted the air, and then she saw it. The plumpest little rabbit she had ever seen, nibbling seeds or something. She froze, her muscles tense. Could she catch it? Probably not, but she had to try - it wasn't as if she could go find a more capable warrior, it would flee any second!
She figured that the rabbit was downwind from her, which was good. Maybe she would have a chance! She crept forwards slowly, desperately hoping that the hare wouldn't noticed her. It didn't seem to, but then the grey she-cat stepped on a piece of dried bracken with a crack. The rabbit's ears perked up, and then it bounded away.
She ran after it for several feet, but it was clear that the rabbit would get away. Ashcloud flopped down right there with a deep sigh. Though her tail was lashing angrily, her pelt was absolutely radiating embarrassment. The only redeeming thing about this was that no other cat had been around to see it, as far as she knew...
