"Don't look so downhearted, dear," Willowface offered, her voice light. "Once that splinter's out, we can continue with your practice. The day's not yet spent!"
She kept her tail up, hoping that her positive tone might help Dawnpaw feel less worried about her splintered paw. With moss tucked into her apprentice's jaws, it was hard for Willowface to gauge just what the nervous little cat was feeling.

Dawnpaw pricked her ears. "Really?" she meowed, relief heavy in her mew. She skipped a few paces to catch up until she was walking at Willowface's flank. With the moss in her jaws, she couldn't say much. As soon as they reached the camp, she deposited the moss beside the camp entrance, figuring that they could put it away after her splinter was dealt with. She inhaled as a fresh, though small, wave of pain shot up her sore paw. She sat down and turned her paw over to examine it. The skin around the splinter was reddened and puffy, but she could easily see the splinter sticking out.

Willowface leaned down to look.
"Oh, now that shouldn't take more than a heartbeat to get out!" she purred. "But we want it done right, so you wait here. I'll go fetch the medicine cat."

Dawnpaw decided to be helpful and go to the medicine cat, rather than the medicine cat going to her. After all, her paw didn't hurt that bad. She gingerly followed Willowface into the medicine den and came out only a few moments later with a splinter free paw. She gave her mildly stinging pad a few rough licks before turning back and calling to her mentor. "Can we really go back out now?" she asked.

Willowface flicked her tail. "If you want to," she offered. "And if the medicine cat says its all right - which I'm sure it is."
She blinked at Dawnpaw's paw. "Fishing is a bad idea - don't want the smell of your wound scaring the fish away. Hmmm... any thoughts? Anything you want to do?"

Dawnpaw shuffled her paws as she thought of all the things she had to learn in order to become a warrior. "Umm," she hummed thoughtfully. "Well I guess we could practice swimming," she suggested. "Or hunting prey on land... or fighting..." She paused, momentarily overwhelmed with how much there was she didn't already know. How would there ever be enough time to learn it all? She heaved a sigh and looked to Willowface. "Which one do you think would be easiest?" she mewed.

Willowface looked about. She didn't want to strain Dawnpaw's paw or risk it getting hurt again - but there was risk in all those things. She knew for a fact though that Dawnpaw had very, very little experience in swimming.
"There are shallows near where we went fishing. There's enough time left in the day for a swimming lesson, I think," she decided. It was where all the apprentice honed their skills - it wasn't likely that anything would hurt Dawnpaw there.

Swimming... Dawnpaw plucked anxiously at the ground with her forepaws. Though, for once, it was anxiety to get going rather than actual fear. Finally she would learn the very skill necessary to be a RiverClan cat, or so she believed. But, if every Clan cat could swim, then it wouldn't be special for RiverClan to do it. Her tail quivered as she took a couple steps towards the camp entrance. "That sounds good," she mewed distractedly. "Where are we going to go?" Her brother, Reedpaw, had always felt more confined in camp when they lived in the nursery. Dawnpaw had always kind of believed she could be happy spending her days in the camp, but now that she'd been out and about with Willowface, she wasn't necessarily sure that was true anymore. Her paws itched to go back out into the territory.

Willowface lifted her tail and led Dawnpaw along the shoreline. They passed the spot where their fishing practice had gone south, and headed up towards the neutral territory between RiverClan and WindClan. The water wasn't as deep here, and the scents of several apprentices permeated the air. reeds swished to and fro, sticking up and out of the water.
"All bodies of water have a great big drop after a certain point of shallows," she instructed Dawnpaw. "Here is where we figure the drop is furthest out - while kits train their paddling in the streams around our camp, apprentices practice swimming here. There's very little debris underpaw and it's easy to keep an eye on you."

Dawnpaw listened carefully to her mentor talk about drop offs and safe places to practice swimming. When it seemed like Willowface was finished, she waded out about half a tail-length from the shore. Her tail quivered excitedly at the feeling of the cool water washing over her paws. It felt nice, especially on her formerly splintered pad. The black and white apprentice turned back to her mentor with her tail slowly waving back and forth behind her. "So... do I just... go?" she asked uncertainly.
